Take Metro to These 5 Free Holiday Events That Suck!
December 1, 2023
Looking to celebrate the season this weekend? Here are 4 free holiday events that you can get to with only Metro!
1. Dec 3rd - Suburban Heights Tree Lighting
Ready to spruce up your evening? Head to the lawn of the administration building at 6:45pm to watch the lighting of a 7 foot Douglas fir. The event will feature the Eastern Elementary children’s choir and a performance by the middle school color guard. The ceremony starts at 7 and the tree is turned off at 8:30 per local code. Just a half mile from Metro's commuter rail, with trains at 5:30pm and 8:45pm.
2. Dec 1st - Dec 18th - Citywide Window Decorating Contest
The competition is aggressive this year! Storefronts all over town will be competing for the coveted "Best Window" prize and $86. Shops that have entered so far include "A's Pasta Source" and "Hair Today" While the first two businesses are over a mile from Metro, keep an eye out as more are likely to join the fun!
3. Dec 22nd - Screening of "The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause" at the Pike Drive-In
Get in the spirit of the holidays with a free showing of "The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause" which is listed on IMDB! While a car is not required for the showing, however it is recommended by the venue as the most comfortable.
4. Dec 1st - Dec 14th - Toy Drive
Stop by Center Garden Square to drop off toys for those in need! The drop boxes are just outside the Walmart Supercenter at the west end of the parking lot. Donations are accepted online, but Metro bus 8 runs every 45 minutes, so why not head down and watch the festive boxes fill up. The retailers in the plaza have committed to donate up to $300 worth of toys.
5. Dec 18th - Downtown Ice Skating Rink
Strap on those skates as the downtown skating rink is scheduled to open on the 18th. Due to last year's failure of the refrigeration equipment, the system is not yet online, but the parks department is trying for some cold weather to freeze the ice the old fashioned way. Donations are being accepted for repairs to the refrigeration system, but until the ice is frozen, stop by the new sports complex next door! Completed last year for 2.5 million dollars, this state of the art facility hosts over 2 games a month!
